ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – MoWest Soccer extended its unbeaten home streak with a 2–0 shutout victory over Nebraska Kearney on Friday night at Spratt Stadium.
The Griffons (7-1-3, 3-1-2 MIAA) struck twice in the first half and never looked back, earning their third conference win of the season.
Rachyl Benavides opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing off assists from
Rosemary Pujado and
Nicoletta Froehlich.
Alyssa French then extended the lead in the 36th minute, pushing MoWest ahead 2–0 going into halftime.
It was a dual effort in goal for the Griffons, as
Morgan Byrd and
Katie Stoskopf combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season. Byrd made one save in the first half, while Stoskopf stepped in for the second half and recorded four saves — the first of her MoWest career.
Nebraska Kearney (2-6-4, 0-3-4 MIAA) was held to limited chances as the Griffon defense stayed strong from start to finish.
MoWest returns to Spratt Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. to host Fort Hays State for St. Joseph Youth Soccer Day.
