ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri Western men's basketball trailed 34-29 at halftime, but outscored Maryville 38-22 in the second half en route to a 67-56 win at Moloney Arena in St. Louis Saturday.
The Griffons (4-1) played stifling defense down the stretch, holding Maryville (0-4) to just 9-of-24 shooting in the second half, including 3-of-13 from three.
Missouri Western shot fairly consistent throughout, ending the day 24-of-46 (52.2%), though the three-ball only went in on 2-of-13 attempts (15.4%). The free throw shooting was solid, though, as Western hit 17-of-21 at the stripe (81%).
Zane Nelson continued his productive ways with a game-high 17 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. He was 9-of-10 on the foul line.
Zion Swader poured in 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Justin Bubak tied his career-high with 13 points on a 6-of-7 clip.
Missouri Western continues non-conference play at home this Tuesday against Rockhurst. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 p.m.
