ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Missouri Western Lacrosse weathered a near three-hour long lightning delay to take down Concordia-St. Paul on Friday afternoon, winning 13-9 at Spratt Stadium.
The Griffons were led by a total team effort, receiving a hat trick from
Mikaela Ness and two goals from
Sam Pruitt,
Jordan Coulon,
Madison Brady and
Caetryn Gilreath, as well as an assist apiece from Brady and
Jessica Brook.
The first quarter was rough for the Griffons, who went into the quarter break down 2-1 to CSP (5-7). Little did either team know, when they left the field to recoup after the first quarter, they wouldn't retake the field for nearly three hours due to lightning and severe storms in the St. Joseph.
When both teams finally did retake the field, the Griffons found the next gear, winning the second quarter 6-2 and leading at halftime 7-4. Brady scored an important goal in the second quarter, netting her 100th score as a Griffon.
A shortened halftime did nothing to slow down the Griffons, who won the third quarter 4-2. Two goals came early in the quarter, as Ness and Gilreath scored two goals before five minutes had passed. Concordia grabbed two goals back, but Brady and
Tavia Yocom put the game out of reach with goals of their own, with Yocum scoring her first goal as a Griff.
The fourth quarter saw a season first, as CSP forced the Griffons to use a second goalie.
Mackenzie Porter received a yellow card at the 8:07 mark of the quarter, with the Griffons tallying four yellow cards in the game. With Porter out of the contest for a short while,
Delanie Boyd saw her first action in net. Missouri Western gave itself enough cushion to squash a late rally from CSP, and the Griffons closed out the 13-9 win.
