Griffon Soccer meets No. 1 seed Washburn in MIAA Tournament

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Now that the regular season has concluded, Griffon Soccer begins the postseason in the MIAA conference tournament against the No. 1-seeded Washburn Ichabods.
 
The Griffons finished their season at home with a 2-0 loss against Northwest Missouri State for their Senior Day game. The team enters the MIAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed.

  • Junior goalkeeper Keeley Kroonenberg scored her first career goal to force a draw against then-No. 15 Central Missouri in the 86th minute of the game last Friday.
  • Six Griffons earned all-conference honors
  • Senior forward Jaden Skinner finished the regular season second in shots (73) and shots on goal (34). She is also third with nine goals and 20 points.
  • Freshman forward Kendall Knisley has the sixth-most goals in the MIAA with six.

The Ichabods of Washburn (15-2-1, 9-1-1 MIAA) have had a stellar season thus far. Despite the l1-0 oss they suffered last weekend to Emporia State, the Ichabods are currently ranked eighth in the nation. Washburn finished the regular season 8-1 at Yager Stadium.
 
Who to Watch
Junior forward and All-MIAA Honorable Mention Ana Muruzabal is the team's leading goal scorer with seven goals and 17 points. Star senior goalie and MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year Raegan Wells has played 990 minutes this season. She has collected 28 saves with a .903 save percentage. Junior defender Jordan Tenpas and sophomore midfielder Belle Kennedy also nabbed a first-team all-conference award. Tenpas was also named Defender of the Year in the MIAA. 
 
Head Coach
Continuing with the postseason awards, Davy Phillips was awarded MIAA Coach of the Year for leading his team to 15 wins this season. Phillips has been coaching the Ichabods for six seasons. Under his coaching, Washburn has had 30 All-MIAA members and has had at least seven wins a season. Philips' record with Washburn is 59-44-9, and he is 103-58-15 overall in his nine-year career.

Rivalry Record Rabbit Hole
The Griffons are 12-14 all-time against the Ichabods. Dating back to 2005, no game has ever ended in a draw. From 2016 to 2021, the Griffons went on a six-game winning streak. Since then, Washburn has won two straight. This will be Missouri Western's second postseason meeting vs. Washburn, last seeing them in the MIAA Tournament on Nov. 3 in Warrensburg, Missouri. The Griffons won 1-0 to advance to the MIAA Championship.
 
Last Time Out
The last time these two teams faced each other was Oct. 6 of this season. The then-No. 25-ranked Ichabods won by a narrow 1-0 margin. Kennedy scored the game's only goal in the 54th minute.

Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday at Yager Stadium in Topeka, Kansas.

On this day in Missouri Western Soccer history, the Griffons faced Washburn in the rivalry's first MIAA Tournament installment. The game was deadlocked until Bridget Blessie broke the scoreless tie with 12 seconds to spare before halftime, sinking a header in the 45th minute. This goal proved to be the game-winner, sending Missouri Western to the MIAA Championship.
