Griffons sweep season series of Newman

WICHITA, Kan. Sending over a season-high 14 service aces, Missouri Western State Volleyball cruised to a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) over the Newman Jets Saturday on the road at Fugate Gymnasium.

The conference win improved Missouri Western's record to 15-7 overall and 8-5 in MIAA action.

Holly Heldt finished with a match-high 15 kills on the day to lead the Griffon offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .353. Defensively, Missouri Western (15-7, 8-5 MIAA) had three players reach double figures in digs, including Anna Weberg's 21, 13 from Lia Graham and 10 more from Nessa Johnson.

Newman fell to 0-21 overall and 0-13 in the conference.

SET 1 | The Griffons won the first point and never trailed to secure the first set 25-18. Missouri Western led by eight points at 19-11 before closing out the set, totaling 16 kills along the way. Missouri Western also supplemented its offense with six aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Missouri Western continued to roll after a set-one win by earning a 25-18 victory in set two. Strong serving helped the Griffons earn the set-two victory. Missouri Western notched five aces in the set win. The Griffons ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.

SET 3 | Missouri Western then finished off the match with a victory in set number three. The Griffons led from the first point on in the set to secure a 25-12 victory. Missouri Western opened up as much as a 15-point lead at 24-9 before finishing off the set, totaling 15 kills in the process. The Missouri Western offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
