Griffon Volleyball brooms Bearcats in Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo.  For the first time since 2017, Missouri Western State Volleyball has beaten Northwest Missouri State. 

The Griffons totaled 53 kills en route to a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-17, 25-19) over the Bearcats on Tuesday on the road at Lamkin Gym.

The Griffons (16-7, 9-5 MIAA) were led by a double-double from Holly Heldt, who registered 13 kills and 10 digs on the day. Emma Salker also added 13 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Anna Weberg chipped in for with 23 digs to go with five blocks from Danielle Moje.

Northwest loses a three-game winning streak and falls to 12-10 and 7-7 in the MIAA.

SET 1 | The Griffons took control of the set-one lead at 2-1 and never trailed to win 25-16. Missouri Western led by as many as 10 points at 23-13 before finishing off the set, totaling 15 kills while only notching one attack error in the process. The Griffons got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Northwest attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Missouri Western carried the momentum from a set-one win by securing a 25-17 victory in set number two. The Griffons grabbed control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and never trailed. Missouri Western opened its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to close out the set, totaling 19 kills in the process.

SET 3 | Missouri Western then ended the match with a victory in set number three. The Griffons led from the first point on in the set to earn a 25-19 victory. Missouri Western ended on a high note, claiming its biggest lead, six points, to close out the set, collecting 19 kills along the way.

GAME NOTES

  • Missouri Western Shad three players in double figures in kills.
  • Missouri Western had four players in double figures in digs.
  • Heldt, Nessa Johnson and Lia Graham each had a team-high one ace in the win.
  • Heldt's double-double is the ninth of her career.
  • Missouri Western never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-19.
  • Missouri Western attackers were helped by a match-high 44 assists from Johnson.
  • This win ends a 10-game losing streak against Northwest.
  • This is MWSU's first sweep of Northwest in Maryville since Sept. 24, 2003.

Missouri Western returns home to play Emporia State (11-10, 5-8 MIAA) on Friday at 6 p.m. in St. Joseph at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Hornets lost 3-2 to Central Missouri on Oct. 21 in Emporia, Kansas. The Hornets next play No. 10 Nebraska Kearney on Tuesday in Kearney, Nebraska.
