EDMOND, Ok. — Griffon Tennis wrapped up the weekend in at the ITA Regional Small College Championships on Sunday afternoon.
The entire team made its way out to Edmond for the preseason tournament. The weekend started early for the Griffons playing in Pool A, with
Anya Chavez,
Lucia Casas Blas and Anaís Peralta Criado playing playing at 8 a.m. on Friday, followed by MacGibbon at 9:30 a.m.
Pool B saw
Ariella Curci, Nicole Donelly,
Kim Le, and
Ellie Messenger start their tournament later on in the morning, with first serve being at 11 for the majority of Pool B.
POOL A SINGLES RECAP
Chavez won her opening match in the tournament 6-1, 6-2. She proceeded to win her round of 32 series 6-3, 6-2, advancing to Saturday morning. Chavez eventually fell in the last 16, 7-5, 6-2.
Blas had a tough opening matchup and fell 6-3, 6-1 in her opening match.
Peralta won her first match 6-1,7-5, and advanced on to the round of 32. She would then fall in two close games, 6-3, 6-3.
MacGibbon was pushed to the limit in her first match, winning 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. She cruised through her second round match, winning 6-4, 6-3, qualifying for the round of 16 on Saturday.
Once again, MacGibbon was pushed on Saturday morning, winning narrowly by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 10-1. She made easy work of the quarterfinals, winning 6-2, 6-1, before falling in the semifinals 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.
POOL B SINGLES RECAP
Ariella Curci Was given a bye in her first round. She won her second round 6-1, 7-5. The round of 16 saw Curci get pushed to the limit in both games, as she narrowly escaped with a 7-6, 7-5 win.
Her quarterfinals run was far easier, as she advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Curci fell in the semifinal in a close match, falling 6-4, 2-6, 5-10.
Donelly had a bye as well in her first round, and dispatched her second round opponent 6-2, 6-3. She then proceeded to win her round of 16 game, 6-4, 6-2, before falling in the quarterfinals 2-6, 4-6.
Le's first round went by without any issues, as she won 6-2, 6-2. Unfortunately she fell in the round of 32, 0-6, 0-6.
Ellie Messenger had a difficult first round, and fell 1-6, 6-2, 10-7.
POOL A DOUBLES RECAP
The doubles side of the tournament kicked of Friday evening. Chavez and MacGibbon teamed up to win their first game 9-7. They fell in the next round by a score of 8-2.
A similar story played out for Curci and Donnelly, as they teamed up to win their first round match 8-2. They would eventually fall 8-5 in the round of 16.
Criado and Blas found themselves in a tough fight in their first round game, falling 8-5. They fought their way back, climbing through the consolation bracket before falling in the semifinals.
POOL B DOUBLES RECAP
Messenger and Le fell in the first round 8-4, but were able to bounce back and make a deep run in the consolation bracket, reaching the finals before falling.
