Griffon Tennis adds five more All-MIAA picks from 2020-21 season.

Griffon Tennis Snags 8 All-MIAA Selections

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its women's tennis postseason awards and All-MIAA teams for the 2021-22 season on Thursday where Griffon Tennis was featured in eight total selections.

The No. 3 doubles team of Ioanna Lathouri and Anaís Peralta Criado earned All-MIAA First Team honors. They're currently undefeated with a 6-0 overall record and are 5-0 in the MIAA.

Three more Griffon selections were made on the Second Team. Esther Güemes was picked in No. 2 singles for her 17-1, 6-0 MIAA mark while Peralta Criado took the No. 4 singles honors with a record of 16-2 while going 6-0 in the conference. Claudia Iglesias' 14-3 showing in No. 5 singles was also good enough for All-MIAA Second Team.

The Griffons also found four more spots on the Honorable Mentions list; Anya Chavez (11-7, 5-1 MIAA in No. 1 singles); Nicole Donnelly (6-1, 1-0 MIAA in No. 6 singles); Chavez and Isabella MacGibbon (10-8, 3-3 MIAA in No. 1 doubles); and Güemes and Iglesias (12-6 4-2 MIAA in No. 2 doubles). 
 
This is Chavez's and Lathouri's second-straight selection to an All-MIAA team. The Griffons had three honorees in 2020-21. Missouri Western is the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament and will play No. 6 Newman this Friday a 10 a.m. in Edmond, Oklahoma. 

Central Oklahoma's Mae Canete was named the MIAA Player of the Year while her younger sister, Christine Canete, was voted the MIAA Freshman of the Year. Nebraska Kearney's Alexis Bernthal was honored with the MIAA Sportsmanship Award.
 
Central Oklahoma Head Coach Joe Vann and Nebraska Kearney Head Coach Scott Shafer were both voted the MIAA Coach of the Year by their peers.
 
Mae Canete, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., posted a flawless 7-0 record at No.1 singles against MIAA opponents and is currently 15-2 overall. In doubles action, Mae teamed up with Christine in the first position. The Canete due finished the season 6-0 against MIAA foes and 13-2 overall this spring. This is Mae's second consecutive MIAA postseason honor after being named the Association's Freshman of the Year in the 2020-21 season.
 
Christine Canete was selected the 2022 Freshman of the Year after a perfect 6-0 singles record and doubles records against MIAA competition. Overall, the first-year Calif. native was 13-1 this spring playing mostly No.2 singles and 13-2 playing No.1 doubles with Mae.
 
Alexis Bernthal was selected to receive the Association's Sportsmanship Award. Bernthal, a freshman from Boulder, Colo., went 4-4 against MIAA opponents and ended the regular-season spring 9-8 overall playing from four different positions. In doubles action, Bernthal went 4-3 against MIAA foes and 7-9 overall playing from three different positions with various teammates.
 
Joe Vann, Head Coach of the Bronchos, led UCO to its second consecutive regular season title with an impressive 17-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 record in the league. This was Vann's first season at UCO. In his third season leading the Lopers, Head Coach Scott Shafer led UNK to a 11-9 overall record and finished 4-4 against MIAA opponents.
