Queens of the Jungle: Griffons down Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Missouri Western Women's Basketball took down Pittsburg State in an overtime battle to open MIAA play on Thursday at John Lance Arena. 

A physical back-and-forth affair saw both teams lead in the final three minutes of regulation, as OT was needed to separate the two sides before the Griffons pulled away, 80-74.  

Connie Clarke led the Griffons with 21 points and 11 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season. Brionna Budgetts added 17 points, including the game-tying three with 12 seconds left in regulation. 

The game started off all Griffons, and Missouri Western led at the first quarter break, 20-13. A Johnni Gonzalez layup with 4:50 left in the quarter put hte Griffons up nine, the Griffons largest lead in the first.

Quarter number two was a low scoring, balanced affair. Both teams scored 12 points, and the Griffs took a seven-point lead into the halftime break. 

The third quarter was once again level on the scoreboard, with both teams scoring 18 points. Clarke lead the Griffons in the third, scoring nine of her 21 points in the quarter, giving the Griffons a seven-point lead going into the final period of regulation. 

Pitt State stormed back in the fourth quarter, winning the quarter, 22-15. The Griffons were down three with 12 second in the game before Budgetts drilled a three to tie the game. Clarke had a chance to win the game in regulation but her layup rimmed out, and the game went to overtime. 

The extra period would see the Griffons go to work, scoring 15 points in just five minutes of play. Missouri Western never trailed in the overtime, lead by Clarke's five points in the period. 

NOTABLES
  • The win marks the second time the Griffons have won in overtime this season.
  • Gonzalez scored a Missouri Western career best 11 points in the win. 
  • Missouri Western has now won it's last three conference openers. 
  • Mary Fultz scored her 300th career point, and Budgetts scored her 700th in the win.
  • The Griffons 5-1 in OT games during the Whitaker Era.

UP NEXT
The Griffons head to Joplin to take on Missouri Southern (8-0). The Lions beat Northwest Missouri State on Thursday, 52-37.
