Soccer falls at Northwest Missouri but clinches MIAA Tournament berth

MARYVILLE, Mo. — An early goal from Northwest Missouri State gave the Bearcats a 1-0 win over the Griffons on Sunday afternoon, but a Rogers State loss at Northeastern State gave the Griffons the last spot in the MIAA Tournament.

The Griffons (5-9-4, 3-6-2 MIAA) were heavily out-shot by the Bearcats, as NWMSU had 15 shots to the Griffons four. Three of the four shots the Griffons had were on target, and all four came in the second half of the match in Maryville. Jaden Skinner had a shot saved in the 89th minute in the top left corner that could have potentially leveled the game, but it wasn't meant to be.

The loss was only part of the story for the Griffons on Sunday, as they were able to secure the final spot in the MIAA Tournament. Rogers State was downed by Northeastern State in the final minutes of the game, as the RiverHawks came from a goal down to win. This means that Rogers State was not able to pass the Griffons, and MWSU will head to the MIAA Tournament for the third-straight season.

NOTABLES
  • Nine Griffons played 90 minutes.
  • Skinner led the Griffons with two shots.
  • The Griffons have only missed the MIAA Tourney three times in the last ten years.

  • Keeley Kroonenberg made five saves.
