ST. JOSEPH - Weather does wacky things to spring sports schedules this time of year and it's certainly true for Griffon softball (2-4) this weekend.Â
After the cancellation of the Arkansas-Monticello 9-State Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas this weekend, Missouri Western collected three other teams from that regional crossover to come to St. Joseph for the weekend. Not only did the Griffons go from playing six games in three days in Arkansas to four games in two on campus, Missouri Western will now end up playing eight-straight games against the same two opponents. After being swept in their home opening doubleheader by Minnesota Duluth, the Griffons will turn around and play another double-dip against UMD this Sunday. Missouri Western will open this weekend's last-second crossover with a doubleheader against No. 1-ranked Minnesota State before turning around and playing the Mavericks in a doubleheader next week at the Kelly Laas Invitational in St. Cloud, Minnesota.Â
Northwest Missouri will also come to the Spring Sports Complex this weekend to take on Minnesota Duluth in a doubleheader, Saturday, before facing Minnesota State in a twin bill on Sunday afternoon.Â
Missouri Western has been on the offensive of late. The Griffons totaled 32 runs in their last five games.
Shelby Uhl leads the team with a .526 batting average and eight RBIs. The junior outfielder has also scored five runs and collected three doubles in game one against UMD.
Rebekah Mueller homered in three straight games and leads Missouri Western with that trio of long balls while batting .389 with five RBIs. Four Griffons enter the weekend batting at least .381 and five Griffs have at least five RBIs through the first six games.
It's been a different story in the circle, where the Griffons have given up 60 runs and sport an 11.79 team ERA.
Kenzie Hilzer has started five games, going 1-3 in those starts. Freshman
Kaili Hinds has the only other start.
Barbara Billingsley has pitched 5 2/3 over three relief outings.
Admission will be free this weekend and for all home softball games with the exception of the 2018 Hy-Vee Classic, March 16-18. Due to scheduling conflicts, Missouri Western will only host live stats for Saturday's opener against Minnesota State. Live stats for the Griffons' other three games this weekend will be hosted by Minnesota Dulth.Â
