BOLIVAR, Mo. – Missouri Western Volleyball beat Southwest Baptist 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21) to go 2-0 on the opening weekend of conference play.
The Griffons used a rally midway through the first set to take a 17-15 lead before finishing off the set with a
Kelsey Olion kill. MWSU wasted little time getting an early lead in the second set, as they raced out to 10-2 edge. Southwest Baptist would try to fight back late in the set, cutting the Griffon lead down to 23-21. Missouri Western would pick up a
Blair Russell kill followed by a SBU attack error to close out the set.
After shaking off a sluggish third set and early fourth set, MWSU would tie the fourth set at 10 before opening a 15-10 lead. Once the Griffons took the lead, they would never trail again in the set.Â
Stephanie Doak led Missouri Western with 15 kills, as
Blair Russell and
Kelsey Olion each added 11. Russell also added six blocks for the Griffons as
Rachel Friedrichs finished with five and
Ashley Mainord with three.Â
Missouri Western travels next week to Central Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 30 and Pittsburg State on Saturday, Oct. 1. Â
