Baseball Opens Home Schedule After Long Awaited Return

MWSU and Lincoln Are Scheduled to Play a Four-Game Series

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Griffons will finally get a chance to play in front of the home crowd this weekend against Lincoln. MWSU will look to stay in the upper half of the MIAA after they beat Emporia State 3-1.

GRIFFONS PREVIEW
Missouri Western most recent game was two weekends ago when the Griffons beat #4 Emporia State 3-1 and helped head coach Buzz Verduzco pick up his 300th MIAA win. Missouri Western was suppose to complete a four-game series with Lindenwood but that was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

MWSU has four players hitting at least .300 through the first 11 games of the season. The Griffons have produced 52 runs and have collected 91 total hits, ranking them fifth in the MIAA.

David Glaude is hitting .302 and has tallied four home runs and six RBIs this season. MWSU has also relied on Trevor LaHonta and Cosimo Cannella to produce runs. They have combined for 32 hits, 12 RBIs and 11 runs.

The Griffons pitching continues to improve as they have a team ERA 3.48. Richard Peoples, A.J. Martinez, and Banks Born all have a 2-0 record on the season. Peoples was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week two weeks ago after his performance against ESU. 

OUT HITTING OPPONENTS
Missouri Western is currently 5-0 when they out hit their opponents and have a record of 1-5 when the opponents out hit them. 

The Griffons season-high in hits is 12 against #17 Arkansas Tech. They have had double-figure hits three times this year and have had nine hits in three other games.

Missouri Western is led by four players with double-figure hits, Trevor LaHonta (17), Cosimo Cannella (15), Ryan Degner (13), and David Glaude (11). Three other players have at least five hits as well.

LINCOLN BLUE TIGERS PREVIEW
Weather has been unkind to the Blue Tigers in the early part of the season. LU has had their last two series cancelled and have only completed three-games so far this season. Lincoln is currently 0-3 after falling one game to Central Missouri and a two games to Southern Arkansas.

The TIgers have collected 13 hits so far this season and have scored eight runs. LU is led by Nick Lovell and Dillon Walker each collecting three hits for the Blue Tigers. Lovell has tallied three runs and has a batting average of .375. Walker has stolen two bases in two attempts.

Lincoln has used six different pitchers this season with Trevor Schnieders and Ryan Simpson each average a 2.25 earn to lead the team. Schnieders has five of the teams 17 strikeouts and has allowed just three hits  through the season.

CENTENNIAL MOMENT
Baseball began in the spring of 1970. Athletic Director Charlie Burri appointed Doug Minnis as the first baseball coach. Minnis ended up coaching for 30 years before 
retiring.
