ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Griffon's women tennis team takes the court for the first time in 2014. Missouri Western opens up spring play against Maryville University on Friday, February 21 at 2:30 pm down at Noyes Tennis Courts.
This season, Missouri Western returns eight of its nine players, which includes junior
Ceara Boldridge, who had a team-high 11 wins last season. Boldridge finished the year winning seven of her final eight singles matches.
Also returning for the Griffons are sophomore
Meara Smith, who played 13 out of 22 matches at the No. 1 singles position a season ago. Sophomore,
Denise Chiao also returns as she split time with Smith at the No. 1 position in 2013.
Doubles partners
Kayla Dysart and
Alyssa Dougan also return. The tandem went 6-7 and 2-3 in the MIAA play a season ago.
Missouri Western is led by first-year tennis coach
Tom Smith, who spent 25 seasons at the helm of the men's basketball team before retiring last March. Smith coached Valparaiso for three seasons and was named its conference coach of the year in 1966. His wife, Pasty Smith, is a former Griffon coach and took the program to its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1998.
Maryville: The Saints brought in seven freshmen to compete this year. Coached by Peter Hantack, Maryville won its first two matches this season, sweeping Principia College and Missouri Baptist 9-0.
Next up for the Griffons is a road game against Rockhurst. The Griffons are set to play the Hawks in Kansas City, Mo. at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 25.
