Griffons at it again
The Griffons have won eight straight games after sweeping doublheaders at Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern this past weekend. It is the second significant win streak for the Griffons this season, after winning 11 in a row between March 6 and March 17. Western saw its 11-game streak snapped in a doubleheader sweep at Emporia State on March 25, and have went without a blemish since. That's good for 19 wins in the team's last 21 games.
Bishop stiffling MIAA batters
Griffon ace
Jackie Bishop collected three wins and 30 strikeouts over four games this weekend. The reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Week, had a career-high 16 strikeout performance on April 6 at Pittsburg State; shutting out the Gorillas. That was just game one. In game two of the doubleheader, Bishop entered in relief, picking up six more k's and the win. Bishop earned her second shutout victory of the weekend the next day in Joplin. Her eight k's against the Lions gave her 184 strikeouts on the season. Bishop is currently 18-2 with a 0.84 era.
Chances at repeat dwindling
After claiming its first ever MIAA Championship last year, Western currently sits two games behind first place Emporia State in the MIAA standings with just two conference games remaining for both teams. It may be up to Lincoln to determine the conference champion this year, with the Blue Tigers as the last MIAA opponent for both teams this season.
Scouting Drury
The Panthers sit at 26-15 overall and are 15-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Kelseas Garthoff is 13-5 with a 1.97 era and Monica Villarreal is 12-8 with a 1.95 era. Stacy Razo leads the team with a .341 average and four home runs. The Panthers are averaging just over four runs per game and their pitchers are holding opposing batters to a .286 clip.
On deck
Tonight's doubleheader begins a six game home stand for the Griffons. Western hosts Lincoln on Saturday and future MIAA foe Lindenwood on Sunday. The Griffons close the regular season with a trip to Oklahoma to take on two other future conference rivals in Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma.
