WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Missouri Western baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against No. 2 Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. on Sunday afternoon. Western fell in game one 11-0 and lost a heartbreaker 9-8 in game two. The Griffons fall to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in MIAA play.
Game 1 - UCM 11, MWSU 0
Two big innings by the Mules put game one of the double header out of reach defeating the Griffons 11-0. The Griffons scattered five hits leaving five runners on base in the contest. Five different Griffons got hits.
Brandon Simmons had a rough outting giving up five runs in five innings while striking out three and walking four. He falls to 2-1 with the defeat.
The Mules scored five runs in the thrid inning on five hits and one Griffon error. Jon Cotter got the big two RBI double down the right field line putting the Mules up 2-0. Two more RBI hits and a steal of home by Albert Selanders gave the Mules a commanding 5-0 lead.
Another big inning by the Mules in the sixth gave them a 11-0 lead with just one inning to play. Kurtis Schuyler pitched a complete game improving to 1-0 for the Mules giving up five hits and striking out four. UCM had 10 hits with Bret Schwartz, Jordan Coons and Ben Cox all had two hits in the game.
Oliver Kadey pitched just one inning giving up four hits and four earned runs while striking out one for Western while,
Logan Forbis walked both batters he faced.
Game 2 - UCM 7, MWSU 6
Things looked good for Griffons in game two taking a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but seven runs by the Mules in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh down the Griffons 9-8.
The Griffons capitalized on two Mule errors in the second inning claiming an early 4-0 lead. Doubles by
Bubba Dotson and
Spencer Shockley to go along with a single by
Kyle Simpson helped the Griffons get the big lead.
A homer in the fourth by
Grant Fink and one in the fifth by
Nate Ramler extended the Griffons lead to 6-0 with just two and a half innings to play.
In the bottom of the six the Mules capitalized on two Griffon errors and had five hits getting seven runs. With the Griffons up 6-4 Jon Cotter stepped to the plate and knocked a three run homer over the left field fence giving UCM the 7-6 lead with an inning to play.
In the top of the seventh leadoff hitter
Michael Schulze walked and advanced to second on a bunt single by pinch hitter
Jake Graham. Both players advanced a base on a passed ball putting the go ahead run on second. Ramler stepped to the plate in a clutch situation hitting a single to left field putting Western up 8-7 with a half an inning to play.
Unfortunatly the Mules bottom of the seventh started with an throwing error by shortstop
Michael Schulze. That led to the Mules loading the bases and then Brad Wilson singling to right center giving the Mules the 9-8 victory. UCM improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play.
UCM had 12 hits with Cotter going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored while Wilson went 2-for-3 with the walk off single. Travis Unthank picked up the victory in releif going one inning giving up two hits and one earned run while striking out two. Adam Maddox started the game going just three innings giving up four hits and two earned runs with three strikouts.
Western had 10 hits with Ramler and Shockley each getting two hits. Ramler had three RBI while Shockley scored a run and had one RBI.
Nik Jurado went 5.1 innings givng up seven runs with non earned.
Jake Jones fall to 0-1 giving up two hits and one earned run in just a third of an inning.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Monday, March 5 with a nine inning game starting at 1:00 pm in Warrensbrug.
