The Missouri Western State University Griffons (19-4, 4-0 MIAA) will have a busy home week with three double headers. The Griffons open up the week on Wednesday, March 14 with a double header against non-conference opponent Wayne State College (Neb.) at the Griffon Softball Field in the Spring Sports Complex. Game time is set for 2:00/4:00 pm. The Griffons return to MIAA action on Friday, March 16 with a double header against rival Northwest Missouri State University at 1:00 pm. On Saturday the Griffons will take on the Truman State Bulldogs in a double header at 1:00 pm. Last season the Griffons fell twice to the Wildcats while sweeping the Bearcats and the Bulldogs.
The Wildcats are currently 7-3 on the season after a ten game road trip to Clermont, Florida. The Wildcats won its first six games before falling in three of its last four. The Wildcats are coming off a 5-1 victory over Wilmington (Del.). they fell to Southern New Hampshire 7-2, Southern Connecticut 6-5 and Grand Valley State 3-2. As a team the Wildcats are hitting .313 with Dani Sandel leading the charge with 16 hits, 10 runs scored, three doubles and five RBI. Kasie Nurton is hitting .423 with 11 hits and 3 RBI while Kaiti Williams had 11 hits and a .367 average. On the mound Sara Scheffert is 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA. She has 21 strikeouts allowing her opponent to hit just .196 off her. She has walked 16 batters. Since 2002 the Griffons hold an 11-6 lead over the Wildcats. Western is 6-1 at home, 3-4 on the road and 2-1 at a neutral site.
The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are an even 9-9 on the season and 2-0 in MIAA play. After losing its first four MIAA games the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats have won 9 of their last 14 games which includes three of the last four games. The Bearcats swept Lincoln 8-0 and 4-0 and defeated Lindenwood 7-6 before falling 5-3 in the night cap on March 10th. Northwest is being led by Kristen Uthe at the plate batting .345 with 19 hits and three homeruns. Kayli Shurman is batting .298 with five homeruns and 13 RBI while Josie Van Houten is batting .344. Jordan Ereth is 7-for-7 in stolen bases. On the mound Jenna Creger is 3-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 55 innings pitched. She has struckout 58 batters and walked 14. Morgan Brunmeier is 3-3 while Abbie Vitosh is 2-2. The Griffons are 16-15 overall against the Bearcats since 2002. Thye are 6-5 at home and 9-4 on the road but just 1-5 on a neutral field.
The Bulldogs of Truman State are off to a 10-11 start this season and are 1-1 in MIAA action. Truman has won four of its last five games but fell in their last game against Lincoln on March 10 by a score of 3-2. Truman swept Newman 5-1 and 9-7. The Bulldogs beat Missouri St.-Louis 10-5, Southern Indiana, 2-0, St. Mary's (Texas) 4-3, Texas A&M International 14-1, Texas A&M Kingsville 9-1, and East Central 4-3. On offense the Bulldogs have six players hitting over .300. Bridget Schade leads the way with a .426 batting average. She has 26 hits and six homeruns to go along with 17 RBI. Cate Simon is hitting .422 with 19 hits and four home runs while Elizabeth Leath is hitting .393 with nine doubles. On the mound the Bulldogs are led by Kelsea Dorsey with a 2.56 ERA and a 7-2 overall record. She has pitched 63.0 innings with 53 strikeouts and 22 walks. Kristen Krause is 2-4 while Ashley Rotkvich is 1-5. The Griffons are 14-13 overall since 2002 against the Truman State Bulldogs. The Griffons are 7-6 at home, 7-3 on the road and 0-4 at a neutral site. Western has won three of the last four which included twice last season in St. Joseph.
