BENTONVILLE, Ark. - The 19th ranked Missouri Western softball team were able to salvage a split on the first day of the Arkansas-Monticello 5-State Classic. Western won game two of the classic 5-0 against Southwestern Oklahoma State after a disappointing 12-11 loss against Missouri-St. Louis in the opener. Western sits at 10-3 overall with the split.

Everything looked for the Griffons heading to the bottom of the sixt as they led the Tritons 10-3 with six outs left o get. Unfortuantly errors and poor pitching doomed the Griffons givng up nine runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Western opened the scoring in the second inning when Taylor Anding blasted her third homerun of the season scoring Meagan Roemmich giving Western the 2-0 lead. Western went up 4-0 in the third when Breanna Fleschner scored on a Kendall Sorenson double.

In the bottom of the third Brianna Butler hit the first of three Triton homers cutting the Griffon lead to 3-2 after three. Western responded nicely in the fourth scoring three runs with Sorenson getting her second double of the day which scored Fleschner and Kat Steponovich giving Western the 6-2 lead. Haleigh Jenkins blasted a homer in the bottom of the fourth cutting the Griffon lead to 6-3.

Western scored the next four runs with two coming off the bat of Keri Lorbert in the fifth. Two more in the sixth gave the Griffons the 7 run lead. In the sixth things went south for Western as the Tritons scored nine runs on 7 hits while using two Griffon errors taking the 12-10 lead after six innings.

Western tried mounting a comeback in the seventh scoring one run but it wouldn't be enough as Western fell for just the third time this season.

Fleschner had an outstanding game going 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Sorenson and Steponovich both had two hits for the Griffons. Emily Moe went 5.1 innings giving up eight hits and two earned runs while Annalee Rubio gave up five hits, 6 run (0 earned) in the loss.

UMSL had 13 hits with Rutledge and Jenkins each getting three hits. Leslie Davis picked up the victory going three innings giving up six hits and four earned runs with three strikouts.

In game two the Griffons reversed the roles capitalizing on four Bulldog errors and pounding out nine hits earning the 5-0 victory. Jackie Bishop improves to 6-0 as she pitched her second shutout of the season striking out 10 and walking just one.

Western capitalized on two errors by Southwestern in the first inning as Fleschner led off with a single and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher after a stolen base. She would score on an throwing error by the pitcher. Blair Stalder reached on the error by the pitcher and scored on a passed ball. Western led 2-0 after one.

The score remained 2-0 until the third inning when Roemmich hit a two run homer giving Western the 4-0 lead after three. Western taked on one more run in the sixth which would be all Bishop would need.

Roemmich had three hits and two RBI while Taylor Anding had two hits.

The Bulldogs had just three hits in the game fallingl to 7-2 on the season. They left five on base while the Griffons left 10.

Katie Raines fell to 2-1 on the season going seven innings. She gave up nine hits and two earned runs while striking out eight.
