ANDOVER, Kan. – Avery Wells fired a 1-under 70 to lead the Griffon women's golf team through the opening round of the MIAA Fall Designated Event on Monday at Terradyne Country Club.
MoWest finished the opening round in 12th place at 21-over. Southwestern Oklahoma State leads the 15-team field at 3-over, followed by Wayne State (Neb.) at 4-over and Missouri Southern at 6-over.
Wells sits tied for fifth individually after her 1-under performance. She opened with an even-par 36 on the front nine before shooting a 1-under 34 on the par-35 back nine. Wells recorded four birdies during the round, coming on Nos. 3, 14, 16 and 17.
Emma Spurlin posted the Griffons' second-best round of the day, shooting a 4-over 75 to sit tied for 34th. Spurlin carded a 37 on the front nine and a 38 on the back, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th to close out her opening round.
Makenna Casey finished tied for 50th following a 6-over 77. Casey made the turn at 5-over before shooting 1-over on the back nine.
Kylie Ellegood shot a 12-over 83 and sits tied for 75th, while Raleigh Puzio rounded out the MoWest lineup with a 14-over 85 to sit tied for 79th.
Competing as an individual, Cydney Beckmann carded a 7-over 78 and sits tied for 59th. Beckmann shot a 40 on the front nine before closing with a 38 on the back.
