ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Soccer opened its 2026 home schedule in winning fashion Wednesday evening, earning a 2-0 shutout over Wayne State at Spratt Stadium.
With the victory, MoWest improves to 2-0-1 on the season, while Wayne State falls to 1-1-0. The Griffons scored once in each half and held the Wildcats to just two shots for the match.
MoWest wasted little time getting on the board. Cadence Dobberstein opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finding the back of the net at 7:33 off an assist from Rosemary Pujado to give the Griffons an early 1-0 advantage.
The Griffons carried that advantage into halftime after controlling much of the opening 45 minutes. MoWest outshot Wayne State 6-2 in the first half, while Morgan Byrd made one save to keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
MoWest struck again almost immediately after the break. Just 1:39 into the second half, Phoebe Brizic scored her first goal of the season off another Pujado assist, extending the Griffon lead to 2-0 at the 46:39 mark.
Pujado finished the night with two assists, setting up both Griffon goals. Dobberstein and Brizic each recorded two shots on goal, while Kendall Knisley added two shots and Sarah Wilson led the Griffons with three attempts.
The Griffon defense took care of the rest. Wayne State was limited to only two total shots and one shot on goal across the full 90 minutes. Byrd played the opening half and recorded the lone save before Serena Magaha took over in goal for the second half to complete the combined shutout.
MoWest finished with an 11-2 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
The victory also extended MoWest's unbeaten streak at Spratt Stadium to 22 consecutive matches. The Griffons are now 17-0-5 at home since the start of the 2024 season and have not suffered a home loss during that stretch.
