Baseball takes series over No. 9 Rogers State with comeback Saturday

Griffs have their first series win over a top ten team since February 2015.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (26-23, 19-17 MIAA) came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat No. 9 Rogers State 5-3 in a series rubber match on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Griffon Park in St. Joseph.

RSU (38-12, 26-10 MIAA) led 5-0 by the middle of the fifth, but MWSU got on the board in the bottom of that inning when Seth Winkler scored Jordan Austin from third base on a double play.

MoWest then tied the game in the seventh when Luke Shannahan laid down a bunt between third base and the pitcher's mound. A throwing error by RSU pitcher Mason Trotter scored a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3.

The Griffons went in front in the bottom of the eighth when Winkler walked in a run with bases loaded and Luke Parmentier scored another on a sac fly to right field.

Jackson Parrill (3-4) entered the game on the mound in the eighth inning, and kept the Hillcats off the board, thanks in part to a 6-4-3 double play by the Griffon defense in the ninth.

David De Hoyos went 3-for-5 at the plate. Micah Kobuszewski and Miguel Cantu each scored a run and had a pair of hits. Austin scored twice.

Lawson Minshew had a strong 2.1 innings of late relief before Parrill came in, allowing just two hits and striking out one.
