JOPLIN, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (22-20, 15-14 MIAA) was swept in the weekend series, falling 12-11 in Sunday's finale at Missouri Southern (29-13, 24-8 MIAA) at Warren Turner Field.
MoWest struck first in the second inning as
Micah Kobuszewski delivered a two-RBI single to left, bringing home
Issac Sobieszczyk and
Luke Shannahan for an early 2-0 lead.
Missouri Southern answered quickly, tying the game in the second before taking the lead in the third. The Lions then broke things open in the fourth with a four-run frame to extend the advantage to 7-2.
The Griffons chipped away in the sixth, starting with a sacrifice fly from Kobuszewski to score
Juan Guardado.
Jordan Austin followed with an RBI single, and
Miguel Cantu capped the inning with a three-run home run to left, tying the game at 7-7.
Missouri Southern responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs to regain control at 11-7.
MoWest refused to go away, rallying again in the eighth. Cantu launched his second three-run homer of the game to center field, pulling the Griffons within one, and
Seth Winkler followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 11-11.
In the ninth, the Lions capitalized on a wild pitch to bring home the go-ahead run, securing the 12-11 win.
Cantu led the Griffons offensively with two home runs and six RBIs, while Kobuszewski added three RBIs in the effort.
What's Next
Griffon Baseball heads to No. 30 Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday for the series finale, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. in Maryville. MoWest has already secured the series by taking the first two games and will look to complete the sweep.
