Softball gets needed win with split at Washburn Saturday

Griffs snap an eight-game slump, sit firmly in 10th in conference standings.

TOPEKA, Kan. - Griffon Softball (25-16, 6-12 MIAA) split a doubleheader at Washburn Saturday, dropping the first game 6-4 but winning the second 6-4 at Gahnstrom Field in Topeka.

The second game proved to be a key win for MoWest, as they snapped an eight-game losing streak and are now a game above both Newman and Fort Hays State, sitting 10th in the MIAA Standings.

Game 1: Washburn 6 MWSU 4
MoWest struck first with a solo home run from Kalee Higdon in the top of the third inning, but Washburn scored all six of its runs in the home half of the third, launching two home runs in that frame.

MoWest rallied with two runs in the fourth, and had the tying run on first base in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

Higdon went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. She also walked twice. Sydney Young was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Ashlyn Finarty and Ayva McComas each had a pair of hits. Finarty, Higdon and McComas all doubled in the game.

Finarty (5-4) started in the circle and took the loss in 2.2 innings. She struck out two and walked none, but was tagged with six earned runs on seven hits.

Torie Sandoval pitched the last 3.1 innings in scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. She struck out three and walked only one.

Game 2: MWSU 6 Washburn 4
The Griffs broke an eight-game slide, leading 5-1 after the second inning. Ashlyn Finarty had a two-run home run in the first inning, while Kalee Higdon drove one in on an RBI double in the second.

Washburn answered with three runs in the bottom of the third, but MoWest got a key insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single from Finarty.

Harley Pruetting (10-4) made her third start of the season and went the complete game, striking out a season-best 10 and walking only one. She allowed seven hits and was charged with three earned runs.

Sydney Young went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Finarty drove in a team-best three runs on two hits. Kenedee Giddens was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Higdon finished with two RBI.

Up Next
Griffon Softball heads west down the Kansas Turnpike to face Emporia State on Sunday. Those games will be played at Trusler Sports Complex at 1 and 3 p.m. They'll be available to watch on the MIAA Network.
