TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 40 Griffon Tennis (14-3, 5-1 MIAA) fell on the road Thursday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 18 Washburn in conference play at the Castillo Family Tennis Complex.
MoWest battled early in doubles play, but Washburn claimed the point with wins at all three positions. The Griffons pushed two matches to tight finishes at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, both ending in 7-6 decisions in favor of the Ichabods.
In singles, the Griffons found their lone point at No. 3, where Cristina Granero Boj delivered a strong straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-2, to put MWSU on the board.
Several other matches were tightly contested. Jevrosima Mitic pushed a three-set battle at No. 2 singles, opening with a 6-4 win in the first set before falling in the final two sets. Ella Gates also forced three sets at No. 6.
Washburn secured the remaining singles points to clinch the team victory, handing the Griffons their first conference loss of the season and ending the 12-match winning streak.

Griffon Tennis returns home Friday, April 17 at 2 p.m. to host Fort Hays State in its final regular-season home match at the Noyes Tennis Courts or Genesis Health Club, depending on weather conditions in St. Joseph.
