ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Baseball (15-16, 10-10 MIAA) completed the series sweep of Newman (4-27, 2-19 MIAA) with a dominant 20-3 run-rule victory on Sunday at the Spring Sports Complex. The win marks five straight for MoWest.
The Griffons wasted no time jumping in front, plating five runs in the first inning behind RBI singles from
David De Hoyos and
Luke Shannahan, along with bases-loaded walks from
Carson Shear and
Ben Waliczek. MoWest added five more in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from
Seth Winkler to take a 10-0 lead.
The offense continued to roll in the fourth inning, exploding for seven runs.
Micah Kobuszewski delivered a two-run single, De Hoyos added an RBI walk, and
Blake Venneman capped the inning with a two-run single to push the lead to 16-0.
Luke Parmentier added a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the advantage to 19-0.
MoWest tacked on its final run in the sixth on a wild pitch, finishing with 20 runs on the day.
Newman scored three runs in the seventh, but the Griffons' early offensive outburst proved more than enough to secure the run-rule victory and the sweep.
Evan Peterson set the tone on the mound, earning the win after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three. He worked efficiently through 16 batters and did not allow a run.
In the three-game sweep of the Jets, the Griffons produced 47 runs on 30 hits across 84 at-bats, totaling 33 RBI. The lineup blended power with timely hitting, tallying 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 home runs for 51 total bases and a .607 slugging percentage.
MoWest also showed strong plate discipline, drawing 27 walks and posting a .357 team batting average for the series.
