PUEBLO, Colo. – Griffon Lacrosse (4-2) came up just short in a tightly contested matchup, falling 9-8 to CSU Pueblo on Monday afternoon at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium after a fourth-quarter comeback by the ThunderWolves.
MWSU struck first as
Caetryn Gilreath opened the scoring, but CSU Pueblo responded with back-to-back goals to take an early 2-1 lead. The Griffons answered midway through the first quarter with
Olivia Fornelli converting on a man up goal before
Brinley Willenbrock followed with another man up goal to give MWSU a 3-2 advantage after one.
The Griffons built momentum in the second quarter, as
Maleah Sosa,
Clare Sondrall and Gilreath all found the back of the net. Gilreath's goal late in the half extended the lead to 6-2, giving MWSU its largest cushion of the game before CSU Pueblo added a late goal to make it 6-3 at the break.
CSU Pueblo began to chip away in the third quarter, scoring early to cut into the deficit.
Madi Brinkman responded with a man up goal, and Gilreath added another to push the lead back to four at 8-4. However, the ThunderWolves closed the quarter strong with two goals to make it 8-6 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, CSU Pueblo continued its comeback, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 9-8 lead with just under four minutes remaining. The Griffons had opportunities late but were unable to find the equalizer as CSU Pueblo held on for the one-goal victory.

Griffon Lacrosse wraps up its second Colorado swing on Wednesday, March 18 with a matchup at UCCS. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m. CST in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
