Volleyball climbs to program-best No. 7 in AVCA poll

15-1 start propels Griffon Volleyball to its highest AVCA ranking in program history

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Griffon Volleyball continues to reach new heights, climbing to No. 7 in the latest AVCA/Taraflex Division II Women's Volleyball Coaches Poll released Monday.

The No. 7 ranking marks the highest national ranking in program history, surpassing the previous program best of No. 8. MoWest received 857 points in this week's poll after spending the previous three weeks ranked eighth nationally.

The Griffons moved up following a 2-0 road weekend that improved their record to 15-1 overall and 5-0 in MIAA play. The 15-1 record marks the best start in program history, surpassing the 1983 team that opened the season 14-1.

MoWest opened the weekend with a 3-1 victory at (RV) Central Missouri before earning another 3-1 win at Missouri Southern on Saturday. The two victories extended the Griffons' winning streak to eight matches.

The Griffons have steadily climbed the national rankings throughout the season. After beginning the year tied for No. 16 in the preseason poll, MoWest jumped to a then-program-best tie for No. 11 before moving to No. 10 on Sept. 7. The Griffons reached No. 8 on Sept. 14 and remained there for three consecutive polls before climbing to No. 7 this week.

MoWest is one of four MIAA programs ranked inside the national top 25, led by No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney. MoWest climbed to No. 7, while Washburn moved to No. 13 and Emporia State sits at No. 19. Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri are also receiving votes.

Ferris State remains the nation's No. 1 team with a 16-0 record, followed by No. 2 Wayne State (Neb.), No. 3 Tampa and No. 4 Fresno Pacific.

The Griffons return to the Looney Complex for Homecoming and Pink Weekend with a pair of MIAA matches. MoWest hosts Fort Hays State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 PM before a top-seven showdown with No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1 PM.
