ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Soccer (5-2-4, 2-2-1 MIAA) saw its record streak of 26 consecutive matches at home without a loss come to an end on Friday night with a 2-1 decision against No. 18 Central Missouri at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph.
The Jennies (9-1, 4-0 MIAA) broke through with their first goal in the 17
th minute from Hadley Lockhart. UCM held MoWest without a shot-on-goal in the first half and led 1-0 at halftime.
UCM extended its lead to 2-0 in the 70
th minute with a Mikayla Ernst goal made possible by a free kick.
MoWest, though, capitalized shortly after in the 72
nd minute with a
Kendall Knisley goal coming from just a few yards outside the goalie box.
The goal was made possible by a strong free kick from
Marielle Wright, and it was only the second goal that the Jennies have allowed all season.
The Griffs, however, were limited to just three total shots-on-goal – all in the second half. UCM had 13 total shots, including eight on goal.
MoWest was called on 12 total fouls, and yellow cards were issued to Wright and
Alexandra Milano.
Morgan Byrd finished with five saves. Knisley finished with three shots and two on goal. Her career goal total is up to 23 – second most in program history. Wright,
Ava Smith and
Sarah Wilson played the full 90 minutes, as did Byrd.
Griffon Soccer is back home on Sunday to battle Missouri Southern. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. Southern played to a 1-1 draw at Northwest Missouri State on Friday night.
