ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Women's Basketball (5-9, 1-4 MIAA) picked up its first MIAA conference win on Wednesday with an 75-67 decision over Washburn (10-4, 3-2 MIAA) at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.
The Griffons, who have now won eight of their last nine games against Washburn since 2022, got down 28-23 late in the first quarter, but responded with a strong defensive effort in the second quarter.
MoWest outscored Washburn 18-10 in the second, holding the Ichabods to just 2-of-10 shooting in that frame. The Griffons had a 44-38 lead by halftime.
MoWest never faltered in the second half, leading 55-40 with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter. Washburn got the deficit to within nine points twice after that, but never closer.
The Ichabods were just 10-of-35 (.286) from the field over the last three quarters combined, and just 1-of-8 (.125) from three-point range in that time as well.
The Griffons forced 26 turnovers, scoring 21 points off of them. Washburn was limited to 20-of-54 shooting (37%), including just 5-of-15 (33%) from beyond the arc.
MoWest achieved a season-best 17 steals in the game as well.
Offensively,
Ana Oliveira Dias and
Nakiya Harris led MoWest with 16 points each. Dias turned in season-best performances in steals (8) and assists (8).
Mia Morel chipped in 12 points and a team-best five rebounds.
Lindsey Kelderman and
LaNicia Parker each had 10 points in the effort.
MoWest shot 28-of-55 (50.9%) from the field, including 8-of-24 (33.3%) from three-point range. The Griffs were also strong at the free throw line, going 11-of-14 (78.6%).
MoWest stays home Saturday to face Central Missouri (10-4, 4-1 MIAA). Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network.
