ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri Western Lacrosse (8-6, 3-2 GLVC) punched its ticket to the GLVC Tournament with an 11-8 win over Lewis (6-9, 2-3 GLVC) at Lewis Stadium on Friday.
The Griffons are now GLVC tournament bound for a third consecutive year in the program's fifth year of existence. Only the top four teams in the GLVC qualify for the women's lacrosse tournament each year.
The GLVC tournament takes place on May 2-4 on the campus of the top seed, which this year will be Maryville University.
The first half of Friday's contest was a back-and-forth battle. The Griffons found themselves down a goal after the first 15 minutes, but outscored the Flyers 4-3 in the second quarter to even the game at 6-6 heading into halftime.
Missouri Western scored the only goal of the third quarter, as
Caetryn Gilreath scored off of an assist from
Maddie Chidester to put the Griffons ahead 7-6 heading to the fourth.
With the game again tied at 7-7 early in the fourth quarter, the Griffs rattled off four unanswered goals to lead 11-7 with 4:25 to go.
Jordan Porter,
Brooke Tjernlund,
Clare Sondrall and Gilreath each had two goals.
Maleah Sosa,
Sam Pruitt and
Ryann Durrett each scored one.
Gilreath and
Grace Williams each had four groundballs. Tjernlund had all eight of MWSU's draw controls.
Ava Garaway finished with 11 total saves in cage.
Missouri Western will conclude its regular season on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. with a match against No. 8 UIndy at Key Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
