Lacrosse falls to No. 5 Maryville Thursday

Griffons welcome McKendree Saturday for Senior Day, home finale.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western lacrosse (7-6, 2-2 GLVC) took a 20-8 loss to No. 5 Maryville on Thursday evening at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph.

The Griffons fought hard early, getting down 3-0 with 8:12 left in the first quarter, but goals by Caetryn Gilreath and Brooke Tjernlund made it a 4-2 game entering the second quarter.

The Saints, winners of now 13 straight matches, took control with eight unanswered goals in the second quarter.

Sam Pruitt scored with just four seconds left before halftime, but Maryville led 12-3 at the break.

Jordan Porter, Pruitt and Gilreath strung together three straight goals to make it a 15-7 game with 13 minutes remaining, but Maryville rattled off three unanswered after that to maintain control.

Pruitt and Gilreath each had three goals. Porter had a goal and three draw controls. Tjernlund finished with a goal and two draw controls. Grace Williams had a team-best three groundballs.

Ava Garaway took the loss in cage, recording four saves in all.

Maryville dominated draw controls 22-10, and the Saints finished with 31 shots to Missouri Western's 15. The Saints also had 24 shots-on-goal. MWSU had nine.

Missouri Western stays home Saturday to face McKendree on Senior Day. That match is set to start at 12 p.m.
