Tennis battles, falls short to No. 9 Washburn

Griffons stay at Noyes to face Emporia State Thursday.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western tennis (4-10, 1-6 MIAA) battled against one of the best teams in the nation and swept the top three singles matches, but No. 9 Washburn held on to beat the Griffons, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Noyes Tennis Courts.

The Ichabods, who have now won 12 straight matches, took two out of three in doubles, and picked up wins in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

 Celia Castaño Malnero and Johanna Priedite scored a win in No. 2 doubles, holding on for a 7-6 win, winning a tiebreaker, 10-8.

The Griffons took each of the top three singles matches. Cristina Granero Boj won No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-3. Her opponent, Washburn's Renske Ubachs, is ranked No. 18 in the nation.

Priedite had success in No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. She won a 7-4 tiebreaker in the third set.

Castaño Malnero took a win in No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-4.

Missouri Western stays home to face Emporia State on Thursday at 11 a.m. The match will be at the Noyes Courts.
