ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –
Logan Winkelman's stellar performance helped lead Griffon baseball (12-24, 10-15 MIAA) to a 5-1 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith (11-27, 6-22 MIAA), marking their first sweep of 2025 at the Spring Sports Complex. MoWest improved its win streak to four games on Sunday afternoon.
Winkelman (1-2) set the tone early with five strikeouts in the opening five innings of play. The junior from Foley, Minnesota, finished with seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work, while allowing only one run and four total hits in his first winning effort in a Griffon uniform. Brayden Ross (1-6) was charged with the loss.
In the third inning, senior
Kaden Doan walked, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Lions' catcher. This created an opportunity for a sacrifice fly RBI by fellow senior
Quinton Robertson, which gave the Griffons an early 1-0 lead.
Missouri Western scored three additional runs in the sixth inning, thanks to RBI singles from
Blake Venneman and
Carson Shear, along with a sacrifice bunt RBI from
Diego Rodriguez, bringing the score to 5-0. They secured their final run in the seventh inning when Doan stole home.
Freshman
Gage Busby entered the bump for the second time this season in the eighth to close the show. The righty from Gower finished with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work to put the game on ice.
The Griffons will return to action on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in Emporia, Kansas, for the series rubber match against the Hornets.
