ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -
Quinn Gundelfinger's go-ahead grand slam in the eighth helped the Griffons (2-15, 1-8 MIAA) to a 13-11 shootout victory over Northeastern State (8-9, 5-4 MIAA) at the Springs Sports Complex. With the win, MWSU snapped a 13-game losing skid and claimed their first conference win of the season.
There were hardly any dull moments in Sunday afternoon's clash between the Griffons and RiverHawks, as they combined for 24 runs inside Griffon Park.
Northeastern opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, but their lead was quickly erased as the Griffs put up five straight runs in the next two innings. This rally featured a two-run home run to left field by
Tyson Gerdes (1) in the second and an RBI double from
Jackson Bryant in the third.
NSU would not go away quietly, equalizing the score in the sixth inning before taking a 10-7 lead in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Western struck back as junior
Frank Gall hit his second home run of the season, sending a two-run shot over the fence in left field to reduce the gap to just one run.
In the eighth inning, trailing by two runs,
Logan Myers started the comeback with a leadoff single. With the bases loaded and no outs in the inning, Gundelfinger connected for his third home run of the season, sending the ball over the fence in left field to put the Griffons ahead for the final time.
Jacob Ross (1-1) closed the show for the Griffons on the bump. The sophomore retired all six of the batters he faced in order to claim his first win of the season. Gunner Nartker picked up a no-decision in his fifth start of the season, finishing with a team-leading five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
As a team, Western narrowly outhit Northeastern State 12-11. In addition to their three home runs, the Griffons hit four doubles, including two by Bryant and one each from Gall and
Cameron Dean.
Missouri Western will be back in action this Tuesday, taking on Maryville of the GLVC in St. Louis. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Weber Baseball Field.
