ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri Western baseball (2-15, 1-8 MIAA) overcame an early deficit to tie the game at 7-7 in the top of the eighth inning, but Maryville (6-7) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and held off the Griffons in an 8-7 decision on Tuesday afternoon at Weber Baseball Field in St. Louis.
Maryville jumped on MWSU early, scoring four runs in the first to take a 4-1 lead. Missouri Western hit back with three runs in the top of the fourth before ultimately tying the game in the top of the eighth, thanks to a two-run bomb by
Easton Mains and then an unearned run by
Quinton Robertson.
An RBI single by Maryville's Dominic Sharp would be the go-ahead. The Griffons had two on in the top of the ninth, but a groundout and a strikeout ended the game.
Blake Vennemann and
Frank Gall each had a pair of hits to lead Missouri Western at the plate. Gall had a single shot home run in the fourth. Robertson and
Blake Anderson each finished with two RBIs. Anderson had a two-run RBI triple in the fourth inning as well.
Lou Levy (2-5) took the loss on the mound, allowing the one earned run in the eighth inning.
Colby Deaver entered the game in the first inning and provided 6.2 innings of sharp relief, striking out nine batters and walking none.
Missouri Western resumes MIAA play this weekend when they travel to Wichita to take on Newman. The first game of the series is on Friday at 2 p.m.
