ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western lacrosse (5-4) lost a thriller against Dominican University of California Monday, 12-11, as Dominican's Julianne Lane scored a goal as time expired in the fourth quarter at Spratt Stadium Monday.
The match was as close as could be with six ties and five lead changes. Neither team ever led by more than two goals.
Missouri Western's best quarter was the second, as the Griffons put up five goals in that frame to lead 8-6 at halftime. Dominican (10-1) tied the match at 9-9 with a last second goal to end the third quarter.
The Griffons got behind 11-9 with 9:54 remaining, but a pair of goals by
Caetryn Gilreath in the final minutes tied the match again at 11-11 with 3:49 to go.
Dominican forced a turnover with about 30 seconds to go, and then called timeout with 18 seconds left, ultimately setting up their winning goal.
Gilreath and
Sam Pruitt led the scoring with four goals each.
Jordan Porter scored twice to go with an assist and a team-best five groundballs.
Jessica Brook led the way with three assists, while Pruitt had two.
Ava Garaway finished with seven saves.
Grace Williams caused a team-best four turnovers.
Missouri Western stays home Saturday to open GLVC Conference play against Quincy. The match is set to start at 12 p.m.
