EMPORIA, Kan. – Missouri Western baseball (3-19, 2-11 MIAA) staged a comeback, but fell short at Emporia State, 10-9, on Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The Hornets jumped on the Griffons early, leading 7-0 after the second inning. Trailing 9-2 entering the seventh, Missouri Western put up four runs in the top of the frame, sparked by a two-run RBI double by
Kaden Doan.
Trailing 10-6 entering the eighth, the Griffons put up two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.
Quinton Robertson hit a single-shot homer with two outs in the ninth to make it a one-run game.
Easton Mains walked, putting the tying run on base, but
Logan Myers was called out on batter's interference in the next at-bat, ending the game.
Mains, Doan and
Easton O'Keefe each had a pair of hits. O'Keefe and Doan each drove in three runs. Robertson, Mains and
Quinn Gundelfinger each scored two runs.
Colby Deaver (0-4) took the loss in 5 innings of work, striking out four and walking three. He surrendered five earned runs.
Jacob Ross struck out two in the bottom of the eighth in a relief effort.
Missouri Western heads to Topeka Friday to open a three-game series at Washburn. First pitch from Falley Field is set for 4 p.m.
