Box Score EMPORIA, Kan. - Missouri Western men's basketball (17-12, 8-10 MIAA) shot 52.7% (29-of-55) from the field and made 12-of-29 from three (41.4%), but the Griffons couldn't withstand a three-point shooting assault from Emporia State, as the Hornets (10-17, 7-11 MIAA) made 16-of-23 from deep and pulled out a 95-85 win on Wednesday at White Civic Auditorium.
MWSU's 85 points are the most they've put up against a Division II opponent this year, but the 95 points are the most they've given up all year.
Western started very strong, jumping out to a 24-12 lead in the first 6:46, but Emporia answered with a 19-8 run to take their first lead at 31-29 with 8:22 left in the first half.
The Hornets flipped the script and were able to build a lead as they hit each of their first eight three-pointers and 11 of their first 13 overall.
ESU led 49-43 at halftime, and raced out to a 61-43 advantage with 16:56 remaining. Missouri Western was able to fight back, and got to within 88-83 with 2:04 to go, but the Hornets pushed the lead back to 10 with 57 seconds left and held on the rest of the way.
Zane Nelson had another stout performance with a game-high 25 points, making 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
Justin Bubak chipped in a career-high 21 points on a career-best five made threes.
Zion Swader came through with 17 points and five assists.
Julius Dixon added 13 points and a team-best nine boards.
Missouri Western is back home to face Newman (14-12, 7-10 MIAA) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for the regular season finale. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and on the MIAA Network.
It'll be Senior Day for nine players.
