FORT SMITH, Ark. - Missouri Western overcame a 20-point second half deficit and were down by two with 3.3 seconds remaining.
After Arkansas Fort-Smith's Tommie Williams missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line, Western's
Zion Swader corralled the rebound and hurled a shot from 3/4 court as time expired.
The ball was in the air, the buzzer sounded, the shot went down and was initially counted. But, after a lengthy review, the call was overturned. The shot was deemed to have been taken after the clock had hit 0.0 seconds, and the Griffon men (16-11, 7-9 MIAA) lost a 57-55 heartbreaker to Arkansas Fort-Smith (11-14, 5-11 MIAA) at the Stubblefield Center in Fort Smith Thursday night.
The Griffons got down 27-11 early and trailed 34-19 at the break. The deficit ballooned to 39-19 with 17:29 to go, but the Griffons turned things around behind a season-high 28 point and 10-rebound effort by
Zane Nelson - his third double-double this season.
After shooting 30.4% (7-of-23) the first half, the Griffons hit 48.1% (13-of-27) the second half, while holding the Lions to 7-of-24 (29.2%) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. In all, MWSU outscored UAFS 36-23 the second half.
Nelson was the only Griffon in double figures.
Julius Dixon was second in scoring with 7 points.
Missouri Western is back on the road Saturday to face Northeastern State (14-11, 8-8 MIAA). Tip-off from the NSU Event Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma is set for 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen).
