Griffon Soccer secures first MIAA Tournament Championship with overtime golden goal

WICHITA, Kan. – For the first time in program history, MoWest Soccer are the champions of the MIAA Women's Soccer Postseason Tournament.

Playing at the Scheels Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, the No. 4-seed Griffons took down No. 6-seed Central Oklahoma Bronchos 2–1 in overtime to claim the program's first-ever MIAA tournament title.

The victory also gives the Griffons the MIAA's automatic ticket to the NCAA Division II postseason.

MoWest struck first in the championship match, as Kiara Carr found the net in the opening six minutes off a setup from Rosemary Pujado. Central Oklahoma answered in the 19th minute with an unassisted strike from Jane Lockhart. Neither side could break the deadlock through the remainder of regulation, sending the match into overtime.

In the 100th minute, Ava Martin delivered the golden goal off a perfect cross from Kiara Carr to secure the championship.

Goalkeeper Morgan Byrd finished with five saves, turning in a stellar performance in the title match.

The NCAA Championship bracket will be unveiled during the selection show on Monday, Nov. 17, streamed live on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. That's when the Griffons will learn their opponent for the opening round.
