Furious comeback dashed

PITTSBURG, KAN. – Senior first baseman Travis Wiese (Vancouver, Wash.) and sophomore center fielder Anthony Taggart (Topeka, Kan.) each clouted home runs during a five-run Missouri Western State University rally Saturday, April 13.

Wiese, who's series line against host Pittsburg State University improved to .600 (six-for-10) with three RBI, a run scored, and two doubles to go with his round tripper, and Taggart joined junior shortstop Blake Anderson (Overland Park, Kan.) who tallied two hits including a double to allow head coach Damian Stambersky's crew to reach the five-or-more run mark for the 58th straight outing. They also helped bring the Griffons back from a 5-0 deficit into a 5-5 tie after seven-and-a-half innings.

While the Gold and Black appeared poised for a split of the first two contests of the weekend MIAA swing at PSU's Al Ortolani Field, the Gorillas had other plans. A six-run eighth inning deluge spurred by five hits broke up the comeback and led the hosts to an 11-5 victory.

MWSU (18-21 overall, 9-17 overall) concludes the set with a 12 p.m. first pitch Sunday, April 14,

NOTE: Anderson ran his current string of multiple-hit efforts to five during the afternoon. He's hitting at a stratospheric .500 clip (14-28) in the span. It's also part of a personal eight-game hit string.
