PITTSBURG, KAN. – For a second successive outing, Missouri Western State University pushed host Pittsburg State University to its final at-bat.
Unfortunately, just as occurred in the middle match-up of the weekend MIAA series, the Gorillas had one more offensive attack in their arsenal at Al Ortolani Field. The winning tally in a 6-5 thriller Sunday, April 14, crossed on a wild pitch.
Before the final inning finish, head coach
Damian Stambersky's squad added to an already-impressive plate string. The Griffons scored five-or-more runs for a 59
th successive outing, guided by senior first baseman
Travis Wiese (Vancouver, Wash.), senior outfielder
Ryan Koval (Olathe, Kan.), and junior shortstop
Blake Anderson (Overland Park, Kan.). Wiese, wrapping up a white-hot nine-for-13 weekend, tallied three hits; Koval registered two safeties including a home run; and Anderson's remarkable roll of multiple-hit outings reached six with two hits. Sophomore outfielder
Anthony Taggart (Topeka, Kan.) smashed a second Gold and Black homer to add to the 10-hit afternoon.
Junior
Robert Farrell (Joliet, Ill.) and senior
Sam Kratz (Mason City, Iowa) gave the pitching staff some highlights, too. They combined to hold PSU's offense to only one earned run while striking out six over the final three and two-thirds frames.
MWSU (18-22, 9-18 MIAA) resumes a seven-game road trip Tuesday, April 16. They visit Maryville University in non-league action for a single nine-inning clash at 5 p.m.
