ST. JOSEPH, MO. – Newman University pulled away from a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association mid-game draw with a high-flying offensive attack Saturday, March 23.
Head coach Damian Stambersky's Griffons and the visitors at Griffon Park were bottle-necked at 1-1 through four frames of the weekend series finale. Junior starting pitcher
Christian Whiting was strong over the first four frames, holding the Jets to the lone tally on four hits while striking out two. However, the Western bullpen surrendered 10 runs on nine hits over the final five frames. Newman's pitching staff, meanwhile, kept the home team of the scoreboard towards an 11-1 game three decision that gave them the loop set.
Senior second baseman
Ryan Neise (Wildwood, Mo.) and junior shortstop
Blake Anderson (Overland Park, Ks.) each produced two-hit games to guide Missouri Western's offense. Senior catcher
Noah Cook (Urbandale, Iowa) smashed a run-scoring double, too, that tied the game in the third inning.
MWSU (14-14 overall, 6-10 MIAA) begins four in a row on the road Tuesday, March 26. The Griffons visit Warrensburg, Mo., for a 3 p.m. start against the University of Central Missouri.
