ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The 35th-ranked Missouri Western tennis team extended their best start in program history to 9-1 Thursday, edging out a 4-3 win over Southwest Baptist at Genesis Health Club.
The Griffons battled illness alongside the Bearcats, but swept SBU in doubles to claim the first point of the match.
Anya Chavez (7-5, 6-2),
Lucia Casas Blas (6-4,6-2) and
Maria Saez (6-1, 6-1), earned wins in #1, #4 and #5 singles to claim the match for MWSU.
The "Griffitas" finish non-conference play with a .900 winning percentage. Now comes the gauntlet of MIAA play. Western has the next eight days off and will return to action on Saturday, March 30th, when they host Northeastern State University. Time is set for 10:00am and Noyes Courts.
