ST. JOSEPH, MO. – Junior infielder
Quinn Gundelfinger picked an apropos time to launch his first home run of the 2024 campaign.
Anchoring a game-changing six-run first inning, the Nixa, Mo., native drilled a Newman University pitch high and deep into the early Spring sky Friday, March 22, plating four Missouri Western scores at Griffon Park. Gundelfinger's long-ball heroics were part of a memorable afternoon, as he went two-for-three with five RBI which included a stolen base.
Gundelfinger was one of two players for head coach Damien Stambersky's squad that tallied multiple-hit outings against Newman University in MIAA action. Junior designated hitter
Kaden Doan (Frisco, Texas) smashed a pair of hits for the home side, too, as part of an 8-7 decision that evened the weekend loop series after Newman captured a 6-5 decision Thursday, March 21.
The bullpen tandem of graduate student
Zack Cushing (Topeka, Ks.) and junior
Robert Farrell (St. Louis, Mo.) made the early offensive attack stand up. They gave up just three runs and struck out three over the final five and a third frames with Cushing garnering his fourth victory and Farrell recording his first save. Sophomore starter
Lynden Bruegman (Lincoln, Neb.) continued to be a strikeout machine for the Gold and White, fanning seven Newman hitters over three and two-thirds.
MWSU and Newman wrap up their weekend set Saturday, March 23. First pitch at Griffon Park is 1 p.m.
