Griffs Have Chances, Can't Ground Jets in Opener

ST JOSEPH, MO --Though they had plenty of opportunities, Missouri Western Baseball had a hard time cashing in, leaving 10 Griffons on base in a 6-5 loss to Newman Thursday.

Junior Jake Beckmann (0-2) got the ball to start for the Griffons (13-13, 5-9 MIAA ) and took the loss. Freshman Caleb Peterson was a bright spot for the MWSU, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Offensively, the Griffons were paced by senior Jared Munk, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Jackson Bryant went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Missouri Western left 10 runners stranded on base in the loss.
» Missouri Western State pitchers faced 45 Newman hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out nine.
» The Griffons drew seven walks from Newman pitching.
» Munk led the Griffons at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
» Newman was led offensively by senior Joe Kinneberg, who went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

The Griffons and Jets are back at it again Friday for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm at Griffon Park.
