Griffon Women Clinch Outright Crown With 105-38 Win

All 15 Griffons Score In Win at Newman

Box Score

WICHITA, KS -  With March Madness on the horizon, the Missouri Western women's basketball team finished February with an emphatic statement.

The MIAA Championship and a hall of fame team lives exclusively in CandiLand.

The 19th-ranked Griffons clinched the conference title outright after annihilating Newman 105-38 Thursday night in the Fugate Center.  MWSU also defeated the Jets, 108-45 earlier this season.

Missouri Western (23-4, 18-3 MIAA) shot 60 percent as a team and all 15 Griffons scored  in the rout of an over-matched Jets squad (2-24, 1-19 MIAA).

Western has won 13 straight games, their longest winning streak since the 2015-16 conference championship team started 18-0. Due to a new wrinkle to the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame,  the outright MIAA title earns the 2023-24 Griffons an automatic induction into the university's hall of fame. The official induction will be at least five years down the road.

There is still much more history to be written this season. The Griffons close out the regular season at Pittsburg State on Saturday.

Notables

  • Thursday's win marks the Griffons' fourth 100-point game of the season and the tenth of the Candi Whitaker era (2019 - current)
  • Connie Clark and Brionna Budgetts led the balanced Griffon onslaught with 18 and 16 points respectively.
  • Wichita native Jadyn Schomp saw her first action and scored here first points in two years. Schomp missed the majority of the last two seasons due to injury.
  • The top six MIAA teams now have 20 wins or more.
