Pitching leads Griffons past Maryville in 2024 home-opener sweep

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.  Spearheaded by the one-two punch of Sydney Rader and Harley Pruetting in the circle, Griffon Softball swept past Maryville in a home-opening doubleheader this Monday at the Spring Sports Complex. 

GAME 1 | Missouri Western 2, Maryville 1
Missouri Western (1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 2-1 victory over the Saints in game one.Sydney Rader (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for MWSU. The right-hander went all seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.

At the plate, the Griffons were paced by Bubba Hoelscher, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Abby Dickey furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Kaylea Fessler also contributed for MWSU, putting together zero hits in zero trips to the plate while adding three walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Western got on the board thanks to Dickey's RBI double with two outs.

After the Saints rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Griffons came back to retake the lead in the sixth inning. Western scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Hoelscher, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Griffons. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as MWSU held on for the win.

GAME NOTES

  • Rader struck out five Saints hitters.
  • Western's highest-scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed one run across.

Pruetting (1-1) got the win for MWSU (2-2). The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.

Offensively, the Griffons were led by senior Sarah Swallow, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Myah Dywer furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Hoelscher also helped out for MWSU, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Western got an RBI single from Hoelscher, scoring Dickey from second base.

The Saints failed to push any runs across before the Griffons offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Western brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Dywer's single, which brought the Griffons lead to 3-0.

Maryville narrowed MWSU's lead to 3-1 before the Griffons stretched the advantage to 4-1 in the fourth inning. The Griffons scored a run on Swallow's leadoff home run off Chayse Ramey. Maryville put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but MWSU still held on for the 4-2 win thanks to Natalie Kisisnger's first save of the season.
