TOPEKA, Kan. — Griffon Softball split day one of the Washburn Invite on Friday, earning its first shutout win of the season in the process.
GAME 1 | Missouri Western 2, Augustana 0
Sydney Rader was dealing on Friday, throwing a shutout to lead Griffons over the Augustana Vikings 2-0 .
Rader (2-0) went the distance for Missouri Western (3-2), giving up six hits, walking three and striking out seven.
In the batter's box, the Griffons were led by Bubba Hoelscher, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Taylor Jones furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Myah Dywer also chipped in for MWSU, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons took the lead for good in the third, scoring for the first and only time in the inning. Western plated two runs off of Augustana pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Hoelscher.

GAME 2 | St. Cloud State 5, Missouri Western 4
The Griffons took a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning but could not hang on and fell 5-4 to the St. Cloud State Huskies in game two.
Natalie Kissinger (0-2) came out of the bullpen for MWSU (3-3) and took the loss. Harley Pruetting was a bright spot for the Griffons, starting the ballgame and throwing 2.2 shutout innings, allowing one hit, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Jada Collins led the way offensively for the Griffons, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Kate Voisin put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Dywer also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for MWSU with a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Western hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring four runs, courtesy of a two-run shot by Collins and a solo bomb by Voisin. The Griffons were unable to hold the lead, as St. Cloud State scored five times over the remaining three innings to grab the 5-4 win.
