Griffons split doubleheader and win series at Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Thanks to a dose of small ball late in the day, Griffon Baseball split Sunday's doubleheader and won the weekend series over Drury at Meador Park.

GAME 1 | Drury 6, Missouri Western 5
Sam Kratz (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Missouri Western (6-3). Samson Holcomb was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out two.

In addition to his 4-for-4 day, Ryan Koval had a triple to lead the Griffons. Jackson Bryant furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Jared Munk also helped out for MWSU, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. MWSU's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Munk.

After the Panthers (1-1) rallied to tie the ballgame at four, the Griffons came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Bryant came across to score the lone run of the inning for Western, which brought the Griffon lead to 5-4. The Griffons were unable to hold the lead, as Drury scored two times over the remaining four innings to grab the 6-5 win.

GAME NOTES

  • Koval compiled a four-hit day for the Griffons.
  • Western's highest-scoring inning was the first, when it pushed four runs across.
  • Griffon pitchers faced 29 Drury hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and five fly balls while striking out six.
  • The Griffons drew six walks from Drury pitching.

GAME 2 | Missouri Western State 5, Drury 4
The Griffons responded to being tied 4-4 in the eighth inning to win in thrilling fashion, securing a 5-4 series-clinching victory in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.

David Steffen (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for MWSU (7-3). The right-hander went three innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Jake Beckmann also made an impact on the mound for the Griffons, throwing 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Bryant led the way offensively for the Griffons, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, a walk and two RBI. Blake Anderson put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Kaden Doan also contributed, going 1-for-3 for MWSU with two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffons got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Western managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Panthers (1-2) then tied the ballgame at two before the Griffons came back to reclaim their advantage in the seventh inning. Western scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Bryant, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Griffons.

Drury fought back to even the ballgame at three before MWSU reclaimed a 4-3 advantage in the eighth inning. The Panthers then tied up the ballgame at four before MWSU came back to reclaim their advantage in the ninth inning.

The Griffons scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Doan, bringing the MWSU advantage to 5-4. The score remained 5-4 for the rest of the game, as the Griffons held on for the win thanks to a save by Robert Farrell.

GAME NOTES

  • Bryant had three base hits in the game for MWSU.
  • Every MWSU starter reached base safely in the win.
  • Western's highest-scoring inning was the first, when it pushed two runs across.
  • The Griffs took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
  • Griffon pitchers limited Drury to just 2-for-13 (.154) with runners in scoring position.
  • Griffon pitchers also faced 39 Drury hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out seven.
  • Western drew nine walks from Drury pitching.
  • Bryant led the Griffons at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
  • This is Western's first road series win since 2022.
  • This is also MWSU's first time winning back-to-back series since 2019.

UP NEXT
The Griffons return home on Friday, Feb. 23, for a three-game series vs. Northeastern State (8-4), starting at 4 p.m. at the Spring Sports Complex. After starting 0-4, NSU has won eight straight, most recently beating Randall 17-0 in seven innings on Feb. 17 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
